Barbara Dietrich 1614-1684

Barbara Dietrich married Joss Scholl about 1832. The date is arrived at considering the birth of their possible first child. They lived during the 30 Years War. In spite of great turmoil in their country they may have had four children. Barbara was born in 1614 or four years before the 30 years broke out. The reason we know this is because she died at 70 years old in 1684. There are other guesses on where she was born but with a definite birth year the document seen below appears to fit best.

Is there proof of who Barbara and Joss Scholl's children were?
Proof 1: In 1658 a child: Hanß Adam was born to his parents: Hanß Conrad Heil and wife Jacobea Cammerer. The baptismal sponsors were: Adam Rausch and his wife; Barbara Schollin and her son Hanß Matthauß Scholl. This is definite proof that Hans Matthias Scholl is Joss and Barbara's son.

Proof 2: On 27 January 1665 a child, Hanß Jacob was born to parents: Hanß Conrad Heil, and his wife Jacobe. The baptismal sponsors were: Adam Rausch together with wife; Barbara Schollin, widow; Hanß Andreß Scholl. Barbara Scholl, wife of Joss Scholl is still living at this date however Joss died in 1662 so he is not listed. This is a great bit of evidence that Joss Scholl is the father of Hans Andreas Scholl. Hans Andreas Endris Scholl is 26 years old at this date. It was about this time he married Anna Margretha Hosin and they began their family

Who are Johann Conrad Heil and Anna Jacobea Cammerer?
Johann Conrad Heil was born about 1626 to unknown parents. He married Anna Jacobea Cammerer about 1660 and they had four children.
1. Hans Adam Heil 1658-dec
2. Jacob Martin Heil 1663-1734 married Susanna (1670-1746) about 1693 and had 8 children
3. Johann Jacob Heil 1665-1674 lived 9 years
4. Johann Simon Heil 1670-1736 married Anna Maria Muenck 8 Jan 1695.
Note: Johann Conrad Heil is related to us through Hans Weidmann b 1601. Conrad died 8 Oct 1673 at age 47.

Who is the second sponsor, namely Adam Rausch?
Adam Raush was born about 1610. ans in 1646 he married Magdalena Schmidt who lived from 1614 to 1668. They had at least one child named Anna Margaetha Rausch 1647-1701. Adam died in 1667, or two years after he sponsored Hans Condrad Heil's child Hans Jacob. Adam lived to be 57 years old.

Did the 30 Years War effect Barbara and Joss?
The wars of the 17th century brought great misery to Graben. The
Thirty Years' War from 1618 to 1648 took a heavy toll. In 1622, Graben had 145 citizens, by 1648 there were only 42 citizens.

Who are Barbara's parents?
Barbara's father appears to be  Endris Dietrich and mother is Gertraut Dieterich, from Grantschen, Baden-Wüttemberg, Germany. See document below.

What happened to Barbara's possible children?
2. Hans Matthias Scholl 1636-1682, had a wife and family, lawyer
3. Peter Scholl, 1637-1669+ child?
4. Hans Andreas Endris Scholl 1639-1691, had a wife and family
5. Hans Leonard Scholl 1652-1732, lived to be 80

Is Anna Margaretha Scholl a child of Joss and Barbara?
In the birth of Anna Margaretha Scholl 1654, Joss Scholl is a witness and Margaretha's name is mentioned in the document. We are not sure of the relationship or the name of the person the document was about. See more information below. There is no proof in the document that Anna Margaretha is Joss Scholl and Barbara Dietrich's daughter.

During their lifetime:
This area of Germany was fairly flat and was often a battlefield during the 30 Years War. The 30 Years War was between Catholics and Protestants and who would be in control of Europe. After 8 millions deaths, when the war ended, not much changed in terms of who ruled Europe and in particular Germany.

The Thirty Years’ War and Peace of Westphalia: 1618-1648:
The Thirty Years’ War was one of the most destructive conflicts in European history. The land was ravaged; homes, churches, and crops were destroyed. In Baden, one-half of all the buildings were razed, with its population forced to live in caves. Famine and disease followed the devastation and nearly one-third of the population of Germany died. In the Palatinate, it is estimated that only 50,000 of the original one million inhabitants survived. Population shifts occurred. Swiss immigrants settled in the decimated areas of Baden and the Pfalz. Youth were encouraged to marry young in order to work the land and re-populate the country. The Peace of Westphalia officially ended the Thirty Years’ War. The Reformed Church (Calvinism) received legal status as a state religion. (FamilySearch)

The Dietrich Surname
The Dietrich surname derives from the Germanic personal name Tederich (Theudoricus), which was composed of the elements "theud," meaning "people," or "race," and "ric," meaning "powerful." (Wikipedia)

1684 12 Jan in the morning between 5:00 and 6:00 died in Christ Jesus, Barbara geboren (maiden name) Dietrich the wife of the deceased Joss Scholl legitimate Bürger from here 14........
Translation of second page by Ulrich Neitzel:
I read as follows (beginning on the last line of the first page):
German words in document: welche den 14. mit christl. Ceremonien zur Erde bestattet. Wurde ihres Alters 70 Jahr. Textus defunctus erat ... (last line not readable). (According to Robert Seal a Biblical text was read at the Barbara's burial.)
English translation: who was buried on the 14th with Christian ceremonies. Was 70 years old. <in Latin> Death witness was....
Note from Robert Seal: I read the first word in the Latin phrase as: Textus.
Other examples of "Textus" in this context appear in
--the next record on page 2 for "Anna Barbara": Textus erat ex . . .
--the next-to-last record on page 2 for "Barbara Weickin": Textus defunctus erat ex
--the first record on page 1 for "Anna Elisabetha": Textus erat defunctus ex
In these examples compare the "x" in "Textus" with the "x" in the word "ex".
If the word is "Textus", these phrases are likely indicating what Biblical text was read at the burial.
Pastor: Graben Pastor (Pfarrer) Konrad Stadmann who was from Durlach and served in Graben between 1682-1692 was Barbara's Pastor at her time of death. His hometown of Durlach is 15 miles south of Graben. Pastor Stadmann was the Pastor who chose the burial site, said a prayer over Barbara and entered her death record.

Anna Jacobea Cammerer death 9 Sep 1689 film 004137289 page 266
Final Translation by Robert Seal:
On the 9th of September 1689, in the morning between 7:00 am and 8:00 am, the blessed Anna Jacobea, surviving widow of Hanß Conrad Heÿl, citizen here, died in her Savior Jesus Christ, in the damp, and to be precise in the forest, who on the 10th of September thereafter according to Christian custom with a pulpit speech was honestly buried to the earth in the cemetery of Graben. She lived approximately 57 years.
First Tranmsltion by Robet Seal with notes by Ulrich Neitzel"
In the left margin: Anna Jacobea Heilin, née Cammererin.
On the 9th of September 1689, in the morning between 7:00 am and 8:00 am, the blessed Anna Jacobea, surviving widow of Hanß Conrad Heÿl, citizen here, died in her Savior Jesus Christ, in the damp, and to be precise in the forest, who on the 10th of September thereafter according to Christian custom
with a pulpit speech honestly buried to the earth on the cemetery of Graben to the grave was honestly buried into the earth. She lived approximately 57 years.
Then Ulrich filled in the missing phrase as follows:
I read the missing part as:
...unter Haltung einer Kantzel Abdankung auf dem Gottesacker zu Graben ehrlich zur Erde bestattet worden.
...with a pulpit speech honestly buried to the earth on the cemetery of Graben.
Abdankung is an old term, no longer in use, for a funeral speech (www.woerterbuchnetz.de/DWB?lemid=A00169, enter Abdankung at "Stichwort suchen")
Gottesacker, literally god's acre, an older term for cemetery.
