Christoph Scholl 1716 - 1761

Christoph was born 21 Sep 1716 to Hans Georg Scholl and Maria Elisabetha Weidmann. The cross on his birth record indicates he was still born or died in infancy. However that is not the case and why that cross was entered by the Pastor is a mystery. Christoph's own father had a cross on his birth record but was very much alive. Christoph was a farmer according to his baptismal sponsorship in 1753.

Graben counted 78 households in 1742, Protestant, except for about 42 souls Roman Catholic. Number of school children: 80. In Rüppurr in 1737 Pastor Huber complained that the churchyard was not fenced, which is why the cattle, especially the pigs, were rummaging around the graves; those of Graben and Rußheim 

 

Süss is spelled many different ways in America including Cease, Ceese. Cees, Sease, Seas, Sees, Seese, Size, Suess, and Sweet.  From Rchard Weber's ''Stover Brethren'' =

 
Marriage to Maria Barbara Süss
Included below are the marriage and death records for Marie Barbara Süss.  Barbara and Christoph married 5th January 1740.  Maria was married for 14 years. She died 5 Dec 1754.  That was one month 14 days after the birth of her son Johann Matthias. Matthias died the next year. Christoph died 13 March 1761. He lived 44 years 5 months 23 days according to his death record. Take a look at the Christoph's name in German script on his death record. It's interesting.

News Reports of the Parish:

1737 In Rüppurr in 1737, Pastor Huber complained that the field of God was not fenced in, which is why the cattle, especially the pigs, were digging around the graves; von Graben and Russheim , Weber and Hoyer complain that too much dancing permission is given on the holidays, "whereby there are often great nightly luxuries and people rave about the whole night".

1738 The secular superiors of Graben are not satisfied with their pastor that he is too "sleepy and maintain good friendship with the teacher, the congregation's night-time traffic is very suspicious to the congregation".

1740 The parish of Graben "does not wish for a better pastor because he has changed in all parts so that no more complaints can be made about him".

In 1742, Graben had 78 households, Protestant, except for around 42 Roman Catholic souls. Number of school children: 80.

1743 In 1743 there were again differences between Schultheiß (Mayor) and Pastor in Graben ; the latter complains that the Schultheiß, (Mayor) against the princely decree, had taken a Catholic woman into the parish, that he had hay led by his son on a monthly day of repentance and bed, and that he had read out the parish bill at the Trinity Festival in the town hall, whereby Quarrel had arisen. Schultheiß (Mayor) Christoph Kemp, on the other hand, records the following: “On the last Easter day, the pastor's brother, the chancellor, was with the pastor, as was a Catholic Soldier from Philippsburg. Since everyone meant that the pastor would hold the service in the afternoon, the only person left from the rectory was the schoolmaster - his name is Konr. Gottl. Keplinger - and to everyone's amazement to see the powdered hair going to church, he then chose a chapter in front of the altar, but read it so that everyone could see how much wine had been awarded to him. ”The deer steward Jakob Holtz in Graben has a wine buying process with the chancellor, the pastor's brother.

Comments: The word I am translating as "non-citizen resident" is: "Hindersaß" = Hintersaß = non-citizen resident. The word before that is an abbreviation with which I am not familiar.

Pastor:The Graben Pastor from 1714 to 1719 was Daniel Niklas . He was born in Nördlingen † and died in 1719 in Graben. In 1695 he was a deacon, and in 1701 he served as a Pastor in Aalen. His handwriting can be seen in Christoph Scholl’s death record above.

Same day, same hour [5 January 1740, 1:00 pm], were maritally blessed Christoph Scholl, surviving legitimate unmarried son of the late Georg Scholl, citizen here, and Maria Barbara, Süssin, legitimate conceived unmarried daughter of Johann Martin Süss, local citizen and hunter, they had like the previous ones a wedding sermon, marriage celebration, etc.
Comment: I'm guessing those number with the lines written under the dates in the left column are times. The first record is: 1---30 = 1:30 pm? The other records on the page are all: 1= perhaps meaning 1:00 pm? What do you think, Kent?
Notes: The father is deceased because his son is the surviving legitimate son, the bride is Maria Barbara Suess her father is Johann Martin local Berger, Maria is single
Ulrich Neitzel: Double marriage Just a little add-in to Robert's excellent translation: the words missing are "wie die vorig auch" meaning "like the previous ones". The previous couple, married same day, same hour, were Johann Peter Süss and Maria Barbara Zimmermännin. Johann Peter is the brother of Maria Barbara Süssin. Kent, I think you found a similar double marriage before in the Graben records.

Good evening Kent,I was uncomfortable with the word "vicarius" in this record and upon taking a second look, the word is "viduus" which is Latin for "widower".
