Elizabetha Suter 1832 - 1866

Elizabetha Suter Bachman was born in Boezberg, Canton Aargau, Switzerland the 7th of November 1832. She was the daughter of Daniel Suter and Elizabetha Stoeckli, second wife. Daniel Suter's first wife had died in 1830, leaving two sons, Johannes and Fredrich and a daughter Maria. Elizabetha's mother died when she was two years old. A year later her father married Maria Merz. She later gave birth to a daughter Verena and a son Daniel.

Elizabetha's father was in prosperous circumstances. His children were well trained and had good teachers. Elizabetha was her father's secretary. She was also an accomplished seamstress. He was a lawyer.

The 3rd of October 1852 she married Jakob Bachman of Wiliberg. Jakob and Elizabetha joined the church in 1855. They were anxious to go to Utah, but it was not until 1862 that they were able to make the journey.

The family consisting of the parents, Jakob and Elizabetha and their five children, Maria, born the 21st of February 1854, Verena, born the 20th of February 1857, Jakob, born the 27th of October 1858, Elizabetha born the 14th of March 1869 and Emuel, born the 17th of August 1861 sailed from La Havre, France, on the ship Windermere, the 15th of May 1862. This was the 119th company. The ship set sail on Thursday with 109 Saints from Switzerland and France, under the Presidency of Serge L. Ballif. The Windermere had 460 immigrants on board. Elders Johannes Liederman and Friedrich Goss assisted Pres. Ballif on the voyage.

The trip across the ocean took six weeks. Elizabetha and her five little children suffered great hardships. They were crowded into the poorest part of the boat.

They spent the following year in Florence, Nebraska. Elizabetha gave birth to her sixth child, Sarah, who died soon after birth.

Elizabetha and Jakob with their five children left Florence, Nebraska the 14th of August 1863 on the 10th church ox train, Samuel D. White's Company, the last church train of the season, bringing freight and about 300 Latter-day Saint immigrants. They arrived at the Loop Creek the 21st of August 1863. They arrived in Great Salt Lake the 15th of October 1863.

They went to Ogden and later to Harrisville, a small town near Ogden. Later they moved to Liberty, and from there to Eden. The extreme cold and trying conditions of lack of food and clothing caused Elizabetha great suffering. She gave birth to two more daughters, Rosilla, born the 26th of February 1864 and Bertha, born the 19th of April 1865. She died at the birth of her son Alma, November 1866. She was buried in the Eden Cemetery, a beautiful spot near the mountains in the north end of the town.

Julius Billiter secured the records of 2,900 of Elizabetha's dead ancestors in Switzerland. Elizabetha Suter Bachman's descendants number 9 children, 27 grand children and 167 great grand-children in 1958.

Research

These are the children of Elizabeth or Elizabetha Suter or Sutter: (Info from SB)

1) Maria-- born in Wiliberg, died at age 20 in Eden, never married.
2) Verena-- born in Wiliberg, died at age 68 in Ogden, 10 children.
3) Jacob-- born in Wiliberg, died at age 63 in Eden, deaf mute, lived with
his father and other families and buried next to his father.
4) Elizabetha-- Our records have her born in Bern, but an local official I
corresponded with ( I will send you these notes) says she was born in
Wiliberg. Died at the age of 60. Married a Reeder. I know there are a lot
of Reeders in Ogden and they seem to have done their genealogy.
5) Emuel-- My official says that Emuel "is not a name", but I think that
was probably his name (or maybe a nickname?). We have him born in Bern, I
don't have a death date for him, but he married his 3rd wife at age 61.
6) Sarah-- Died at birth at Winter Quarters, Nebraska
7) Rosilla-- Born in Eden, died at age 25, had 1 daughter. I met 3 of her
descendants and they had not seen Emma's history. They appreciated it.
Rosilla's eccentric grandson (Rowland A. Larkin) took me for a ride to Eden
in his vintage car (very slow ride) and helped me find the gravesite of
Jakob and homestead.
8) Bertha-- Born in Eden, died at age 90. Married a Stallings and I
remember going to high school with some Stallings from Ogden Valley (what
they call Eden, Huntsville & Liberty). You'd think she'd have lots of
descendants, but couldn't find anything online. I have a photo of her to be
sent.
9) Alma-- Born in Eden, died at age 24 on Christmas Day. Elizabetha died
giving birth to Alma.
