Hans Andreas Endris Scholl 1639-1691

Graben, 1650
Hans Andreas Endris was a Bürger (citizen) who lived in Graben, Germany during a difficult time in history. Hans Andreas was buried 17 Dec 1691. His death record says he was 52 at the time of death which means he was born in 1639. In 1695 Hans Endris is referred to as a "middle-class inhabitant here". This means he was a middle class resident of the city/town, or higher up on the social and economic scale than most people in the town. (Robert Seal on middle class)

Other than his death record and Margaretha's death record what we know about Hans Andreas Endris Scholl comes from his children's birth records and some bapisimal sponsorships as seen below. Hans was married to Anna Margretha Hosin born 1644 - death 1693 and they had ten children. Here is the best birth record we have of any their children:

Translation by Ulrich Neitzel:
On 16 February [1681] in the early morning Anna Margretha, wife of Hans Endris Scholl, citizen here, gave birth to a little son, who was thereupon baptized on the 18 February and named Hans Mattheus. Baptismal sponsors were: (1) Hans Andreas Zimmermann, citizen here, and his wife Anna Margretha. (2) Mattheus Rößler, citizen and innkeeper at the sign of the white little horse and his wife Elisabeth. Bürger
In Germany there are nobility, Bürgers, and common folk. Bürgers are legally recognized inhabitants of a city or a state. In other words they are members of the middle class. These citizens are usually richer and/or more influential than a peasant/worker but poorer and/or less influential than a nobleman. If you are not Bürger (citizen) of a village (community) then you are second class resident, no right to vote, no right to get elected to an official job, no privileges at all.

To become a citizen (citoyen) you have to invest money (considerable buy-in fee), in other words rich people even foreigners are welcome.  They can buy a house, a taverne (restaurant), a mill, a bakery (and even marry the baker's daughter).

During their lives:
In the War of the Grand Alliance (1688-1697), the French destroyed Graben, so that only the church, city hall and some buildings remained. The inhabitants of the village were forced into the forests and in the surrounding area. Peace, order and prosperity did not return until the middle of the 18th century. (Wikipedia)

French Devastation
The tactics of the French were not to occupy land, but to wear it down by means of constant devastation. On 8 October 1675 they invaded Graben again. Hanß Jakob Rausch, a citizen of Graben, reported on this: "At the time of the 111th anniversary of the death of the French, and all the inhabitants of Graben were unaware of why they had come into the village and two of them were in front of the house, one of them had smashed the windows with his pipe and hit a maiden in front of her forehead that she had fallen off the bench. The other one pushed the man and told him to take his wife and children away that he wanted to burn. The soldier who had been bedridden with the light on immediately infected a straw mop, took a straw mop and infected his neighbor with a large saucer filled with straw and hay, which then stood in flames, as did the stain on it. Kircze, city hall, Sczulzeißen house and some have been saved with large military. What the French got their hands on, they took with them, including 16 of the best horses." (Graben by Konrad Dussel)

Castle
This may have been all the harder for Graben, since it was probably with a certain degree of glare that it lasted several years, especially in the late 16th and early 17th century. From 1577 to 1586 and from 1604 to 1617 Graben Castle had served as the widows of two margrave countesses, both with the first name Anna. The former, a native Countess of the Palatinate near Rhein, was very rich in blessings for Graben after her death. As early as 1581 she had deposited 2,000 guldens in Pforzheim, whose interest of 100 guldens was used to pay the annual interest to poor widows and orphans of the Graben. (Graben by Konrad Dussel)

The Castle was destroyed in 1675 by the French. Later it was only a ruin. It is said the red sandstones were used for house of the minister of Lliedolsheim some miles west of Graben. The sandstones were also used to pave the streets of Graben. (Gerd Hartmann)

(Translation: Mathias's Gravestone in the Cemetery) Mathias Miller was born 1594 in Augsburg and died in Graben in 1632.
1642-1645 Johann Kratzer
1645-1650 Johann Jakob Zaysser von Hornberg (During the Thirty Years' War Hornburg was occupied by the Imperial field marshal Johann Tserclaes von Tilly in 1626, but conquered by Swedish troops in 1630. In 1645 the Swedish military Hans Christoff von Königsmarck finally had the castle destroyed.)
1650-1652 M Jonas Anwander
1652-1654 Augustin Langer von Bamberg (The witch trials of the 17th century claimed about one thousand victims in Bamberg, reaching a climax between 1626 and 1631, under the rule of Prince-Bishop Johann Georg II Fuchs von Dornheim. The famous Drudenhaus (witch prison), built in 1627, is no longer standing today.)
1654-1656 Ludwig Bach von Durlaw (Durlach) (Durlach was chosen by the margrave Charles II in 1565 as residence of the rulers of Baden-Durlach, and retained this distinction though it was almost totally destroyed by the French in 1689.)
1656-1663 Martin Luzius von Augsburg, (second Priest from here) (Augsburg, Bavaria is one of Germany’s oldest cities. The varied architecture in its center includes medieval guild houses, the 11th-century St. Mary's cathedral and the onion-domed Sankt Ulrich und Afra abbey.) (Grabstein auf den Friedhof.) (Translation: Mathias's Gravestone in the Cemetery) served with Augusta Vindel
1663-1671 Sebastian Aepinus Aping
1671-1674 Johann Georg Pantzhaff von Urach in Württemberg (Württemberg was devastated in the Thirty Years’ War (1618–48) and fell prey to French invasions from 1688 until 1693 during the War of the Grand Alliance. Yet the country enjoyed progressive government. Compulsory education was introduced in 1649.) (Born in Urach Württemberg , studied in Strasbourg, 1652 Pastor in Pfulgriesheim, 1656 in Remchingen with the branches Wilferdingen and Singen, 1666 in Eggenstein, 1667 in Langensteinbach, 1671 - 1674 in Graben , the Evangelical Church of Baden called Parzav or Parzhaff)
1674-1677 Johann Oswald Crusius (Crusig) von Ravensburg (Following the Reformation a "paritetic" government emerged in Ravensburg meaning an equal distribution of public offices between the Catholic and Protestant confession. This system was approved at the end of the Thirty Years' War in the Peace of Westphalia (1648).
1677-1682 Immanuel Rösch von Geislingen (The fortified Helfenstein castle existed since 1100.) (In 1644 Hochstetten had its own pastor, named Joh. Friedr. Buß; In 1677 there was Immanuel Rösch.)
1682-1692 Konrad Stadmann von Durlach (Durlach was chosen by the margrave Charles II in 1565 as residence of the rulers of Baden-Durlach, and retained this distinction though it was almost totally destroyed by the French in 1689.)

Documents related to Hans Andreas Endris Scholl:

An engraving by the French engraver van Loon around 1650, about the size of a postcard, shows a Graben in the same style with Bruchsal and Speyer

This map was made by the French in 1659, sixteen years before the Graben Castle was destroyed. It seems that the Castle must have been quite big compared with others in Weingarten or Philippsburg. Other villages around Graben don't have such a symbol. so we know that Graben was a rather important place...the river Pfinz was the border between Graben and Neudorf.

The first map of Graben, where the castle (on the right) is to be seen of the year 1689. As the castle was destroyed in 1675 by the French it was only a ruin in those days and was used as a quarry! So we know that the  house of the minister of Liedolsheim (some miles west of Graben) was built with stones of Graben Castle. The sort of stone was red sandstone. The remaining stones of the Castle can be seen today.

Robert Seal Note: "of the council" = member of the city/village/town council. "bürgerlich" = middle-class; bourgeois (see Thode, p. 40). He was a middle class resident of the city/town, higher up on the social and economic scale than probably most people in the town.

Anna Margaretha Eytel age 14 death 14 Nov 1692 father Hanns Jorg film 102078298
Translation by Robert Seal:
On the 14th of October [1692], Anna Margretha blissfully fell asleep [died], daughter of Hanß Jörg "Eitel", innkeeper at the sign of the swan, who on the 15th of the same month was buried in a Christian manner, she lived 14 years, 6 months, and 3 weeks.
Note: this is the daughter of Hans Georg Eytel, "Schwanenwürt". I reviewed Anna Margretha Eitels's 1692 death/burial record again to be sure that that there is no indication that her father Hanß Jörg, was deceased. You can assume that he was living at the time of Anna Margretha's death on 14 October 1692

Comment: Hanß Heil's calculated birth year is 1592. Is this your first person born in the 1500s?
Answer: Yes!!! This could be the sponsor mentioned in Andreas's first two children but most likely the next document works better because it has Conrad as his first name.

Anna Jacobea Cammerer burial 10 Sep 1689 film 004137289 page 266
I see you've had a lot of lookers but no takers on this request. I can provide you with the vital details of this record but the specific details of the funeral at the end of the 5th line of text and the beginning of the 6th line escape me. Hopefully another FS community volunteer can help us out with these details.
Translation by Robert Seal:
In the left margin: Anna Jacobea Heilin, née Cammererin.
On the 9th of September 1689, in the morning between 7:00 am and 8:00 am, the blessed Anna Jacobea, surviving widow of Hanß Conrad Heÿl, citizen here, died in her Savior Jesus Christ, in the damp, and to be precise in the forest, who on the 10th of September thereafter according to Christian custom with a pulpit speech honestly buried to the earth on the cemetery of Graben. to the grave was honestly buried into the earth. She lived approximately 57 years.
Ulrich Neitzel
I read the missing part as:
...unter Haltung einer Kantzel Abdankung auf dem Gottesacker zu Graben ehrlich zur Erde bestattet worden.
...with a pulpit speech honestly buried to the earth on the cemetery of Graben.
Abdankung is an old term, no longer in use, for a funeral speech (www.woerterbuchnetz.de/DWB?lemid=A00169, enter Abdankung at "Stichwort suchen")
Gottesacker, literally god's acre, an older term for cemetery.

Anna Jacobea Cammerer burial 10 Sep 1689 film 004137289 page 266
The Pastor in Graben from 1682-1690 was Konrad Stadmann von Durlach. Durlach was chosen by the margrave Charles II in 1565 as residence of the rulers of Baden-Durlach, and retained this distinction though it was almost totally destroyed by the French in 1689. Pastor Stadmann served in Graben from March 1682 until 9 Aug 1690 when his handwriting ends. From 1691 up to his death in 1705 he was the deacon in Pforzheim.  After this because of gloomy times the service has been provided by the pastors of Spöck vicariando, named Zand and Lindemann, after which own pastors were set again.
Note: On 2 March 1689 Count of Tessé torched Heidelberg; on 8 March Montclar levelled Mannheim. Oppenheim and Worms were finally destroyed on 31 May, followed by Speyer on 1 June, and Bingen on 4 June. In all, French troops burnt over 20 substantial towns as well as numerous villages. (Speyer is 20 miles north of Graben.)
Note: "The Nine Years' War" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nine_Years%27_War) between France and a coalition of European forces that led to a devastation of thousands of villages and towns in southwest Germany including the margraviate of Baden.
