The Sidler Family

Symbol of Ottenbach
Anna Hegetschweiler was born in Ottenbach, Switzerland to Anna Siedler, daughter of  Johannes Siedler and Susanna Jenta. Her father's first name is unknown and is presumed to be illegitimate. Hegetschweiler is a common name in Ottenbach. When we visited the Zurich Archives in 2019 we found hundreds of Hegetschweilers and a number who were recently buried in the cemetery next to the church. In Europe grave sites are rented. After 25 years the grave marker is removed and a new person is buried in that spot. Sometimes a family keeps up payments and burials and the plot is kept in the family. In some places like Salzburg the old cemeteries are left in tact. Mozart's sister is buried near the Salzburg Cathedral even after a couple of hundred years but this is unusual.

What did people do for a living in Ottenbach?

Since the end of the 18th century, the textile industry had expanded as a home industry (Putting-out systemThe putting-out system is a means of subcontracting work. Historically, it was also known as the workshop system and the domestic system. In putting-out, work is contracted by a central agent to subcontractors who complete the work in off-site facilities, either in their own homes or in workshops with multiple craftsmen.) in Ottenbach: In 1784, the cotton spinning mill employed 49% of the local population (430 people, 287 of whom worked all year round). At the beginning of the 19th century there were around 350 weaving looms and the Zurich Mechanical Silk Weaving Mill employed more than 200 people in Ottenbach from the village and the surrounding area.
