| Jane Duncan |
Jane Duncan 13, left Scotland with her parents James Duncan & Agnes Ross, and five siblings, James 12, Charles 10, William 7, David 5 and Ann 2. Children James and Ann died during the voyage, James in the Atlantic, somewhere near Cape Verde, and Ann, I suspect but have no proof, somewhere off the coast of Australia close to her destination. As far as my research has taken me so far, I believe that on these ships, there was a small ceremony carried out and those who died were buried at sea. Father James died 27 May 1855 and is buried in Hinton Poineer Cemetery.
Jane turned 14 the day the Ann Milne sailed into Sydney Harbor, 17 January 1842. She was considered weak according to the ship assessment. The girl they were assessing was 13.
After 16 full term pregnancies in 26 years, she was clearly made of sterner stuff than her assessors realized. The family emigrated to Australia in 1841-42.
The photo above is from a booklet compiled by Garth Carseldine, Ethel Tucker’s youngest son but it contains many errors. He describes the Duncans on the ‘Ann Milne' as, Angus Ross and his wife Jean and three children, Charles, David and daughter Jean.

On the night of June 6, 1841 James Duncan's family in the home included: Agnus. William, David and Ann. Jane, James and Charles were not at home. Where was Jane?
In 1841 Jane's parents and grandfather lived at Little Brechin which is two miles north of Brechin. James Ross lived next door to James and Agnes Ross at Little Brechin. Note: Brechin is parish number 275. It was common for children to be put to work at 8 or 9 years of age. So the fact Jane was working at 13 as a FS or female servant isn't unusual. She would have been 13 not 15 but ages were approximated. There were other children born to Agnes and James Duncan but can't verify on Scotland's people. An Alexander, Agnes, Euphemia, and Henry. This needs verification.
