He was born in Enterprise, Utah, on March 14, 1916, 
to Arthur P. and Edna Hulet Jones. On March 23, 1939, he married Merdies
 Luella Banta; they were later sealed in the Bountiful LDS Temple. 
Merdies passed away in 1994. Herman had a long, successful career with 
the Union Pacific Railroad and served as chairman of the Air Brake 
Committee for the American Association of Railroads and as president of 
the Air Brake Association.
Herman and Merdies had five children, Rodney (Ida), Gaye (Blaine) Andersen, Herman Thaylan (Marie), Arthur Lee (Linda), and Nancy (Jon) Stookey. There are 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren to carry on for them. He also has two sisters, Hope Truman Conely and Carita Staheli; and three brothers, Marion, Trenton, Thayne. One sister and four brothers preceded him in death.
The funeral will be held in the Rush Valley Ward on Saturday, December 30, 2000, at 11 a.m., with a viewing, at the church, one hour prior to the services. Burial will be in the Clover Cemetery.
