Jane Elizabeth Crawforth 1855 - 1949

Jane Elizabeth Crawforth Brough

Jane Elizabeth Crawforth Brough was born June 17, 1855 at Mormon Grove, Missouri on the way to Utah. Her parents came in the William glover company. She was baptized September 15, 1867 by Charles Miller at Provo, Utah. Confirmed by JFP Johnson.

The night I was born it was pouring with rain and the tent blew down twice during the night. Mother’s bed was wet for two nights and a day. The night I was born it was Father’s turn to herd the cattle from the Indians. Mother rode in the wagon two weeks, then walked most of the time after that.

Father and mother stayed in Salt Lake until I was three months old, then they moved to Provo. Houses were scarce so w first lived in a dugout where rattlesnakes crawled around night and day but never did us any harm. Father made adobes and built us a house for which we were very thankful.

That first year we did not have enough to eat, nothing but moldy bran, nettles and thistles. That was our food for nine months and mother thought I would die from want of something nourishing. There was one lady in Provo that had flour. Mother took me to see her and offered her clothing or anything just to get a little flour for me, as I was ill. The woman looked me over sand she said, “Your baby looks bad but I can’t let flour go without money.” She saw that this made mother feel badly so she said, “Never mind it will be only six weeks until harvest.”

Mother and I were very sick with mountain fever. We had not eaten anything for several days. One of our neighbors brought in a pieces of beef and put part of it onto boil. We ate some of the soup and it surely tasted good after being hungry so long. About a month after that this same neighbor came to see how we were. He asked how we liked the meat he gave us and Mother told him how good it was. He told us about going on Provo bench and finding an animal that had died of poison. This man was almost starved so he cut quite a large piece of meat from the animal and prayed to the Lord that he meat would not harm those who ate it, and it didn’t.

Mother helped to grub the sagebrush from the land. She was a good hand at sewing so she made burial clothes and helped to lay the dead out.

When I was 13 thirteen years old I could spin four skeins of yard in one day. Mother carded and colored the yarn and it was made into cloth. I helped my Father in the field sometimes. One day when I was on a load of hay a large snake got around my neck. Father shouted,” Be careful or it will bite you.” I took my hand and pulled it off. I wasn’t afraid as I had seen so many snakes.

Those days the people cut the grain by hand with a cradle and raked and bound it by hand. I remember seeing them thrash the grain with a flail and the wind would blow the chaff away. The farm implements consisted of walking plough, cradle and scythe.

My schooling started at ten years of age and I stopped school when I was fifteen and started to work. We used quill pens to write with and sat on just plain benches.

I married George W. Brough on January 5, 1874 in the endowment house in Salt Lake City. From this union was born eight children, five boys and three girls. Their names are as follows, Rosina, Adelade born January 17, 1875 George Albert Brough born October 3, 1878…. died August 7, 1881,j Charles William Brough born December 2, 1883, died January 5, 1918. Owen Lavar Brough born February 22, 1886. Eva Diantha Brough Hansen born November 29, 1888; Vera B rough Kroksh born June 8, 1893, Oral Brough born January 12, 1896, died August 13, 1898.

In 1875 my husband and I moved to Spring city, Sanpete County. At first we lived on a dry farm. We had a one room log house and he made most of our furniture but we bought a stove. The crops were generally poor on account of lack of water and so my husband would have to go away to work in order to earn a living. The farm was two miles from town and neighbors and sometimes there would be from thirty to forty Indians camped near our house but I had a big dog and he would not let the Indians come to the house. They would hell and say, “Pile face no good.”

My health was not vey good and the Doctor said I never would be much better but I was soon alright. We moved into town about 1881 where my husband was away most of the time for 16 years herding sheep. I reared my family quite along for all those years. I was a Relief Society teacher for twelve years and helped with the sick.

We moved to the Bear river Valley in 1907. We first lived on the Indian Farm, working for the sugar Co. there were Indians all around us.

When the Japanese came to work and that was first time I had ever seen a Japanese. One day three of them came to the house with some bottles in their hands and as the men were all away I and my daughters were frightened. They put the bottles on the table and said that they had brought us some beer because it was the King’s birthday.

We moved to central Farm, which was also a Sugar Co farm. Our married children moved to Bear River Valley and we weren’t so lonesome.

Sister Sarah C Garfield and I use to go to Relief Society teaching together for a number of years. We went with horse and buggy and spend all day to get around to all the homes. One day we should gather eggs for donations. We had some in a small tub and some in a box in my lap and Sister Garfield was driving. We accidently went into a ditch and the eggs rattled and toppled and of course we thought they would all be broken but when we got them all gathered up found only two broken ones. We said it was because they were Relief Society eggs. I was a relief Society Teacher for twenty-eight years.

On January 5, 1923 we celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary at the home of our daughter Mrs. Amous P. Hansen. Fifty-seven guests were present. We had a beautiful cake made by an old friend Mrs. Bradshaw. A wonderful dinner was served and a program followed.

When I was 72 the daughters of the pioneers were entertained by my son’s wife Mrs. Owen L. Brough. I was presented with another beautiful birthday cake with seventy -two candles and we had a nice program given by the grandchildren. At the present time I have forty-one grandchildren and twenty great grand children. On Sunday Jun 19 1932 many of our relatives and friends gathered at our home to celebrate my 77h birthday.

Grandma Brough

T’was 77 years ago this June,
The birds of Nature were in tune
Along the Mormon trail they say.
Our Grandma Brough was born one day.

A wagon was her cradle place
All void of satin silk and lace
They traveled one pioneer train
Across the weary sun scorched plain.

When just a little child she said
She almost starved for want of bread
With dug-out homes and scanty clad
Oft times it made them vey sad.

But time brought changes very fast
Good homes and plenty came at last
The good Lord blest the pioneers
And they have praised them through the years.

t
Dear Mother

In eighteen hundred and fifty five
When some of the saints were making their western drive.
A baby girl was born at Mormon Grove,
Down in Missouri a place on the road.

She had no mansion where she could lay her head,
And a covered wagon cradled her fro a bed,
She was bathed in the cool springs on the way,
And grew and thrived from day to day.

What a blessing it was to that husband and wife
To be entrusted with her little life,
They watched her through her tender years
And loved her whether smiles or tears.

In time she married a noble man,
Then for the future they began to plan
To build a home and till the soil,
Which surely required a great deal of toil.

This baby proved to be no other
Than our own dear, kind, loving mother
She gave birth to eight daughter and sons
And has gained love from every one.

We know you’ve had much trouble and strife,
When you helped pioneer Sanpete in your earlier life.
Now you can look at those times and smile
For you helped accomplished things that have been worthwhile.

The son’s and daughter-in-laws added to the score,
Have been linked to the circle forever more.
Grand children and Great Grandchildren total fifty-five
And all but two are still alive.

What greater happiness could on know?
Than to have such posterity here below,
And all united and full of love,
And thankful for blessings received from above.

Now Mother we’ve met all happy and gay
To celebrate your seventy fifth birthday.
You’ve lived beyond your allotted then and three score
And we hope you’ll to see many more.
